Larry E. Matthews was born in LaFollette, Tennessee, located approximately thirty miles north of Knoxville. He was raised in Nashville, Tennessee, where he attended Hillsboro High School (graduated 1964) and Vanderbilt University (BA 68, MS 71).
Larry currently lives in Nashville, where he now works full-time writing books on Tennessee caves after retiring from the State of Tennessee on May 28, 2010. He is currently revising his 2005 book "Dunbar Cave: The Showplace of the South" to include important new archaeological discoveries and to significantly expand the information on the social uses of the cave.
