Lydia Spencer married Lt. William B. Lane on May 18, 1854, in Carlisle, Pennsylvania. Two years later, her husband was ordered too serve in New Mexico, and she joined him there, then accompanied him during his entire career, bearing three children in the west, and crossing the plains 7 times, often without him. Eventually illness forced her husband to retire in 1870. Her memoir I Married a Soldier was originally published in 1893.
