Jock Carlisle was born in England in 1924. He served the Royal Airforce during the War, he studied Forestry at the University of Aberdeen in Scotland and emigrated, with his wife and three children, to Canada in 1968. He became director of the Petawawa Forestry Experimental Station in Chalk River, Ontario. He co-authored two books on forestry during his career. Following his retirement, he wrote The Tangled Tongue, a book that chronicles his personal struggle with his almost lifelong stammer.
