Arthur van Schendel

Arthur François Emile van Schendel (Batavia (Nederlands-Indië), 5 maart 1874 - Amsterdam, 11 september 1946) was een Nederlands neo-romantisch schrijver.

Amsterdam werd hij eerst opgeleid voor het toneel, daarna voor het onderwijs. Vervolgens was hij enige tijd docent in Engeland en leraar Engels in Nederland. Na drie jaar huwelijk verloor Van Schendel zijn eerste vrouw; hij hertrouwde in 1908, vestigde zich als literator eerst te Ede en later in Sestri Levante, Italië, tot 1945.
Van Schendel was een bewonderaar van Gorter. Hij had veel vrienden in de literaire wereld: naast Gorter onder andere Willem Witsen, Willem Kloos en Albert Verwey. Later maakte hij kennis met Jan Toorop en Aart van der Leeuw (met wie hij een uitgebreide correspondentie voerde over stijlkwesties), Henriette Roland Holst en haar man Richard Roland Holst.
Merkwaardig is dat Van Schendel zijn in Italië spelende romans in Nederland schreef en zijn in Nederland spelende romans in Italië.
Na de bevrijding van Italië ging Van Schendel de straat op en kreeg daar een hersenbloeding. Vanaf dat moment was hij gedeeltelijk verlamd. Hij werd naar Nederland vervoerd, maar bleef sukkelen met zijn gezondheid en overleed in 1946 te Amsterdam.
Postuum werd Arthur van Schendel de eerste P.C. Hooftprijs (1947) toegekend voor zijn proza.
Zijn zoon, ook Arthur F.E. van Schendel (1910-1979) genoemd, was hoofddirecteur van het Rijksmuseum Amsterdam; zijn kleinzoon, ook Arthur van Schendel, was jarenlang directeur van het Amsterdamse UitBuro en hoofd Communicatie van de Gemeente Amsterdam.
