He is from Olklahoma but now resides in Saint Louis, Missouri. He is the author of, L'Abri, Portrait of a Shelter and some other titles. His biography, Born Black, was written by a friend, the late Linette Martin.
Sylvester spent most of his life in the UK and worked as a schoolteacher with basketball coaching as his hobby.
Graham Weeks took this photo in April 2000 and likes to call it, The Biter Bit, or if you have the more classical inclination, Sartor Resartus. "Syl specialises in unposed, natural photography, I just snapped him when he least expected it. He was busy photograhing a wedding at the time."
