Umberto Neri

Born in Rimini, Italy on 09/07/1939. After passage of the front in World war II, he moved with his mother & a brother to Rome Italy where he remained til 1946 after his father returned as a P.O.W. of the British in India. In 1946 the family moved to Milan where Umberto attended excelklent public schools. In 1953 the family had moved back to Rome Before his last year of the classical gymnasium,Neri came to Minneapolis, U.S.A., as a High School Exchange student. Before graduation he was admitted to the college of the university of Chicago with a tuition scholarship and a campus part-time job. He attended the University for 9 years majoring in mathematics, with B.S. in 1961, M.S in 1962 and Ph.D. in 1966, with a thesis on Singular Integral Operators (Harmonic Analysis) under the direction of Prof. Alberto P. Caldero'n. In september 1966, he joined the math dept. at the University of Maryland, College Park as Assistant Prof. He was promoted Associate Prof. in 1970 and Full Prof. in 1981. He retired as Prof. Emeritus in July 1999. He was a frequent visitor in Italian Universities, where he lectured & conducted research. He also had extended visits at the univ. of Minnesota , Indiana University, Nice, France, The Mittag-Leffler Institute in Sweden and lectured also in Canada & Belgium. About four years after retirement, he published a paper in mathematical economics with his last post-doc (Beatrice Venturi) from the University of Cagliari. He returned there in March 2009 for a lecture in the Economics Dept. and will return there again in Sept 2009 for one month of lecturing and research. Neri had 4 Ph.D. students at MD and 4 post-docs at the univ. of Cagliari, Italy. He married in 1964, has one daughter and one grandson, born in 2005.They all live in the U.S.A.

Spent his Senior year as a H.S. exchange student in Minneapolis, Minn. In Sept. 1956 he entered the Univ. of Chicago where he majored in mathematics obtaining his Ph.D. in summer 1966.In the fall, he joined the Univ. of MD., College Park as Assistant Prof. In 1970 he became Associate Prof. and in 1981 Full Prof. He retired in 1999 as Prof. Emeritus. During his career, he was a visiting prof at several Italian Universities, the univ. of Minnesota, Indiana University C.I.M.P.A in Nice, France, The Mittag-Leffler Institute in Sweden, etc. He had four Ph.D. students at Md. and four post-doc. students at the Univ. of Cagliari, Italy In the last five years, I have been working in mathematical economics..
