Archibald Gordon Macdonell was a Scottish writer, journalist, and broadcaster. He was born in Poona, India, to a Scottish family. He served as a lieutenant of the Royal Field Artillery during World War I. He then joined the League of Nations in 1922. He later made his living as a journalist in London, writing stage reviews for the London Mercury.
He became famous in 1933 for the publication of the satirical novel England, their England. Also highly praised is his Autobiography of a Cad, a grimly comic portrait of a 1930s Tory. He also wrote a number of novels and plays, as well as some military history.
Under the pseudonym of Neil Gordon he wrote five detective novels, including a Buchanesque political thriller called The Factory on the Cliff (1928); and The Bleston Mystery (1928) done in collaboration with Milward Kennedy, one of the founders of the Detection Club. Under the pen name John Cameron he wrote two other detective novels: Seven Stabs (1929) and Body Found Stabbed (1932).
A. G. Macdonell died in Oxford in 1941.
