Gerolamo Lazzeri was born in 1894 in Bola of Tresana, a little village in Lunigiana, on the border between Tuscany and Liguria in Italy. His father died when he was quite young, so he moved to Milan, where his brother Giacinto already lived. In Milan, Lazzeri knew and worked with the young Mussolini, and collaborated with Benedetto Croce. During the First World War, and soon after, Lazzeri distanced himself from Mussolini and the rising fascism, denouncing the lawlessness and violence. Because of this, he was pursued by the Fascist police, accused of attacks and imprisoned several times.
Because of his anti-fascism, he lost numerous jobs, eventually becoming a printer. Later, he had to move close to Varese, where he lived with his wife and four children, often in financial difficulties.
A heavy smoker, worried about the political situation, guarded by police, he died of a heart attack the 14th of September, 1941.
