Born on Burton on Trent, Staffordshire, England, Philip A. Sauvain attended Cambridge University and the University of London, for a postgraduate certification in education. He has been the head of the geography department at Steyning Grammar School and Penistone Grammar School; the senior lecturer in geography at James Graham College; and the head of environmental studies department at Charlotte Mason College of Education. He is a prolific author of books for adults, young adults, and children, as well as periodicals for Times Educational Supplement, Teachers World, Child Education, Pictorial Education, and British Heritage. He began writing as a response to a challenge from an acquaintance. He draws on his experiences as a teacher of environmental studies and his interest in the history and geography of the British Isles and Western Europe.
