Marcio L. de Souza-Santos

Education:
• Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering by the University of Sheffield (United Kingdom) in 1987. During the time in England, received the “Overseas Research Students Award” twice from Committee of Vice-chancellors and Principals of the Universities of the United Kingdom.
• M.Sc. and B.Sc. in Chemical Engineering awarded, with honors, by the University of São Paulo (Brazil) in 1981 and 1973, respectively.

Areas of Expertise:
• Mathematical modeling and simulation of combustion and gasification of solid fuels, particularly applied to boiler, gasifiers, dryers, oil-shale retorting using fluidized and moving bed equipment. Developer of CSFMB (Comprehensive Simulator of Fluidized and Moving Bed equipment).
• Modeling and simulation of advanced processes of thermoelectric power generation. Developer of IPES (Industrial Process and Equipment Simulator). Studies on new process based on coal and biomass.
• Transport phenomena (energy, mass and momentum transfers) applied to Chemical and Mechanical Engineering problems.

Professional Experience:

• IGT - Institute of Gas Technology (Chicago, IL, USA) from 1991 to 1993. Developed research on fluidized-bed technology and thermo-electric power generation.
• USP - University of São Paulo from 1975 to 1980. Lecturer on the area of Transport Phenomena.
• IPT - Institute for Technological Research (São Paulo, Brazil) from 1981 to 1990 and from 1993 to 1998. Directed a team of 18 researches on various subjects of Thermal Engineering.
• UNICAMP - State University at Campinas, São Paulo, from 1989 to 1990 and since 1994. Professor in the area of Thermal Engineering, especially power generation and fluidized-bed technology. Supervise several theses dealing with those aspects.
• Engineering consultant for several governments and private companies (in Brazil and abroad) on aspects of thermal engineering.
• Technologix Corporation based in the Chicago area, Illinois, USA. Developer of the CSFB simulation program for fluidized-bed boilers, gasifiers, and reactors. The Corporation commercially distributes that simulator.
