Allgayer-Kaufmann, Regine (b Stuttgart, Germany, 11 August 1950) studied pedagogics, music, and German literature at the Ludwigsburg College of Education and Stuttgart University (1969-72), examined in 1972 and worked as a primary school teacher in West Berlin (1972-4). She studied musicology (1974-86) at the Universities of Göttingen and Berlin and took the doctorate in ethnomusicology in 1986. She was an assistant professor at the Free University in Berlin (1987-9), a part-time lecturer at the University of Göttingen (1992), and completed her Habilitation in 1995 with a study on Bandas de Pífanos (based on field research in Brazil). She substituted the chair of comparative musicology at the Free University in Berlin (1996-02) and was appointed professor at the University of Vienna in 2002. She carried out field work in Brazil and in Italy. Her main interests are the oral tradition and transmission of music, aesthetics, music and gender, performance, and Brazilian music (popular and folk).
