Theon of Alexandria

Chr. – 415/416 n. Chr.).

[English] Theon of Alexandria (Greek: Θέων ο Αλεξανδρεύς, called: Θέωνος, Latinized: Theonus) (born around 335 A.D.; died around 405 A.D.) was a Greek astronomer and mathematician. He is the last scientist known by name at the great library of Alexandria in the so-called “Museion”.
His most important work were by 364 A.D. the publication of the “Stoicheia” (“Elements”) of Euclid of Alexandria (c. 360 B.C. – c. 280 B.C.) and his eleven volumes extensive comments on the “Almagest” (or “Mathēmatikē Syntaxis”) of Claudius Ptolemy (c. 100 A.D. – c. 175 A.D.).
Theon was the father of the mathematician and philosopher Hypatia of Alexandria (c. 355 A.D. – 415/416 A.D.).
