Maria Gleit was the pen name of Herta Gleitsmann, who was born in Germany in 1909. She first wrote poems and fairy stories for juvenile publications, and went on to write articles on women's affairs, theatre reviews and literary criticism. She left Germany in the 1930s and worked for a Paris newspaper, travelled round Europe, and moved to New York in 1939.
She may be best known for her novel Child of China, originally written in German and published in the Oxford Children's Library in 1958.
Her novel Paul Tiber, Forester won the Children's Book Award in 1949.
