According to his obituary in The Nation, M.L. Manich Jumsai came from a family of limited means. He won the coveted King's scholarship to study at Cambridge, and later worked for UNESCO in Paris. His lifetime was devoted to German/French/English/Lao/Thai/Cambodian dictionaries, and the history and literature of the region. He died of heart failure on Saturday, January 3rd 2009, shortly after his 100th birthday.
