Mavis Christine Campbell

Marvis was born in 1939 in Jamaica, she attained her Bachelor of Science at the University of London when she was 19 and two years later won her Master of Science.

Her long academic career starts early back in 1971 after she received her Doctor of Philosophy when she spent six years at City University of New York, Hunter College as a faculty member (1971-77). She was a visiting research scholar to the University of Sierra Leone, Fourah Bay College in 1973.

In 1976 Marvis took up the position as professor at Amherst College on the history faculty as Associate Professor between 1976 and 1983 and Professor from 1983 until she retired in 2006 and is now considered one of their many pioneering women. She now hold the title as Professor of History, Emerita.

Over the years she has spent periods as visiting professor to other universities - Guyana, where she was also director of Caribbean studies (1979-80), Edinburgh as visiting fellow (1985-86), Cambridge and Wolfson College as visiting scholar (2000).

Throughout her career she published a number of books, the most recent being, Black Women of Amherst College in 1999.
