Joan Shelley Rubin is professor of history at the University of Rochester, focusing on American cultural and intellectual history in the late nineteenth and twentieth centuries. She received a Guggenheim Fellowship for her 2007 book Songs of Ourselves: The Uses of Poetry in America (Harvard University Press).
