Ernst Wilhelm Förstemann

[Deutsch] Ernst Wilhelm Förstemann (* 1822 in Danzig; † 1906 in Charlottenburg) war ein deutscher Archivar, Bibliothekar und Historiker, Direktor der Sächsischen Landesbibliothek in Dresden. Er ist bekannt als Begründer der deutschen Namenforschung und der systematischen deutschen Ortsnamenkunde, durch zahlreiche sprachwissenschaftliche Aufsätze und den von ihm geprägten Begriff der „Volksetymologie“. Er veröffentlichte weiterhin Schriften auf dem Gebiet des Bibliothekswesens sowie der Mayaforschung.

[English] Ernst Wilhelm Förstemann (1822 at Danzig – 1906 at Charlottenburg) was a German archivist, librarian and historian, director of the Sächsische Landesbibliothek (Saxon State Library) in Dresden. He is known as a founder of onomastics and folk etymology studies in Germany, and also for his seminal contributions made in the early years of Mayanist research, towards the decipherment and understanding of calendrical elements in the pre-Columbian Maya script.
