The French original (Mémoire contenant le précis des faits [etc.]) was published at Paris by the French government in 1756 as a justification of the war with England. In it were included documents captured from the British at Fort Necessity and at Braddock's defeat
"The journal of Major Washington [March 31-June 27, 1754]": p. 124-173
"A letter written by Colonel Napier, and sent to General Braddock, by order of the Duke of Cumberland [dated London, Nov. 25, 1754]": p. 202-209. It was this letter which called forth the ironical defence of the Duke of Cumberland, published at London in 1756 under the title: Reasons humbly offered, to prove, that the letter printed at the end of the French Memorial of Justification, is a French forgery and falsely ascribed to His R--l H--ss
