Alan Sherwood depends on the simple routine of his life: breakfast at the same coffee shop, a stable law practice with is oldest friend, and his kind mother's understated devotion. Then a short and passionate affair with the elusive Sarah Miller, who suddenly leaves him without a word, forces Alan to realize that routine and order are not enough. Feeling solitary and shocked by the late remarriage of his mother, he submits to an engagement to fragile, needy Angela.
