Edition Notes
Drama in five acts in prose and verse, founded on Shakespeare's play.
Title-page followed by 'Preface to the Reader', signed: 'A. Hill. December 5, 1723'; 'Prologue: Spoke by Mr. Wilks'; 'Epilogue: Spoke by Mrs. Oldfield', and list of 'Dramatis Personae', preceding main text; on verso of page 61 and 2 following unnumbered pages, a list of books: 'Lately publish'd; And sold by W. Chetwood'. Ornamental head and tail-pieces, and decorated capitals.
In the 'Preface to the Reader' the author acknowledges a debt to 'The inimitable, and immortal, Shakespeare, [who] about a hundred and thirty Years since, wrote a Play, on this Subject, and call'd it, The Life of King Henry, the Fifth:--- Mine is a New Fabrick, yet I built on His Foundation; and the Reader, I am afraid, will, too easily, discover, without the Help of a Comparison, in what Places I am indebted to him'.
'Hill became interested in theatrical matters, and was (according to his first biographers) 'master of the stage' at Drury Lane in 1709, and of the opera at the Haymarket in 1710' [DNB]
