Critics have described this book as 'rhapsodical', and admittedly the author does get carried away from time to time, nevertheless this remains one of the earliest and most readable biographies of the great French writer. It also contains a very good and compact summary of the Dreyfus case into which Zola immersed himself in the closing years of the 19th century.
