Beaucoup de langues d'Afrique sont écrites, mais dans lesquelles peut-on lire des romans, c'est-à-dire de longs textes de fiction en prose ? Le récit écrit est toujours perçu comme le moyen de susciter et de retenir un lectorat : une presse missionnaire, au début du XXe siècle, encourage ses auteurs à raconter des histoires par écrit. La conscience de l'effet du texte va avec la reconnaissance de l'importance de l'objet roman, qui serait le vrai livre et signalerait la véritable émergence d'une littérature.
