M'hijo el dotor is a play written in 1903 by Uruguayan playwright Florencio Sánchez. It was the play for which he acquired great recognition.
It is a rural drama in three acts that presents a clash between people belonging to the rural society of the beginning of the century, and those who have moved to the city. The theme of the play is the conflict between two different conceptions of life, the eternal confrontation of generations.
Sánchez criticizes the traditional way of life maintained by Julio's family (fossilized mentality), who returns after studying medicine in the city, with vulgar ideas and customs.
The peasant father, the family leader, and Julio, a university student of medicine, will clash at first, where the culture meant a total revision of his life schemes that turned him into an ignorant. This is why he wants to destroy all the values he considers anachronistic: the paternal authority, the obligations imposed by his relationships with women. In this way he loses awareness of certain limits, and justifies deception and irresponsibility. For this reason there is a conflict between the father and Julio.
