Edition Notes

"Presented to the Bannatyne club, by William Henry Miller."

Edited by David Laing, who printed a preface, but withdrew it, owing to objections of the contributor, and the volume was issued in 1834 without any introductory matter. Laing's preface was finally published in his Adversaria, 1867, p. [1]-10.

Reproduces several large cuts of Arbuthnet's device.

A free Scottish version, ascribed to John Barbour, of two French poems forming parts of the Roman d'Alexandre: "Les voeux du paon" by Jacques de Longuyon, with part of "Li fuerres de Gadres" prefixed. Faithfully reprinted from the unique copy printed by A. Arbuthnet about 1580, which lacks t.-p. and 8 pages of signature I.

For full discussion of authorship see The Buik of Alexander, ed. by R. L. G. Ritchie, 1921- (Scottish text society. n.s., no. 12, 17).
