"Roy Lichtenstein held a preeminent place among vanguard American artists for four decades. He proved to be among the most important and enduring of the Pop artists who emerged in the early 1960s. His major themes, usually used ironically, include art based on printed imagery such as the comics and advertisements; art based on art and architecture of a wide variety of styles; and reflective and reflected notions of hackneyed images in a set style.
His formal language consistently involves black outlines, stripes, dots, brushstrokes, flat fields, foils, and such schematic patterns as wood grain and canvas weave."
