Edition Notes

In eight books, the fifth book wrongly headed 'the fourth Booke'; (both fourth and fifth books are present, with no duplication of text). A6 is a cancel.

The symbolism of the image on the engraved title-page is explained in a verse on the facing page: 'This Heav'n-aspiring Tree's th'Imperial State, Whose Branches, shaken by the Hand of Fate, Let fall their rip'ned Monarchs, which appeare The same in Urns,as on their Thrones they were; Herodian observ'd, and having tooke Their sev'rall Lives, hee weighs them with his Booke; Hee findes them weight; Then recommends their Story To Fame; Fame's Trumpet sounds their Shame; their Glory'.

Added engraved title-page, with title: 'Herodian's Imperiall History'; each of the eight books has caption title reading: 'Herodian His Imperiall Historie'; running title throughout: 'Herodian's Imperiall History', or 'Historie'.

STC 13223 [Anr.ed. (of 13222)]; Palmer p.53.

Note at end of text reads: 'Augustam Herodiani Historiam vertebat I.M. Facultatis Art. in utraq; Academia Mr. & Augustissimi (olim) Regii Iacobi ( in provincia Eborum) Delegatus'.[Interpreted out of the Greek by James Maxwell].
