Edition Notes
"Accettisi quel che io posso, porche no posso quel che vorrei vasari."
Holograph.
"Manuscript the property of Mr. Geo Cumberland of Bristol"--1st fly-leaf.
Bound in 3/4 reddish-brown morocco, blind-stamped and gilt without letters, over brown marbled boards, the edges marbled blue.
Paper has watermark: RYE MILL 1818.
Numbered 1-66 in pencil at the top right corners of the rectos, though some of the numbers are trimmed off partly or entirely.
Versos of p. 14 on are blank except for additions and corrections.
Engravings from other works are pasted on rectos of leaves 56 and 67.
The sketches for the "Recollections of Mantua" were made "about the year 1786" (according to the text) or "in 1788" (according to the title-page), and the present draft, probably the only one, was presumably made in or soon after the watermark year of 1818. Cf. Bentley.
Includes a translation of Romano's life from Giorgio Vasari's Le vite de' più eccellenti pittori, scultori, et architettori.
Bentley, G.E. Bibliography of George Cumberland, p. 102-104.
Gift to Victoria University Library. Bentley, G.E., Jr. 2005/10/01.
