Preliminary colour wood-engraved plate is with imprint: "Engraved and Printed in Colours by Vizetelly Brothers and Co.". Plate is with signature: "BF" [i.e. Birket Foster] and includes title caption.
Includes preliminary colour wood-engraved plate with title in elaborate floral border: "Summer". Plate is unsigned.
Most wood-engraved illustrations within the text are with signatures: "H. Vizetelly" and "B. Foster" (or "BF").
Publisher's advertisements on p. [1]-7, [1], [1]-4 and [1]-2 at end include wood-engraved illustrations and list of titles in the "Boy's Own Library", the list including "The Boy's Summer Book".
With the same setting of type (except placement of pagination on p. 86), wood-engraved illustrations and colour wood-engraved plates as used for "Summer" in the author's "The country year book : spring & summer", published in 1847 by Chapman and Hall. See McLean D 0740.
MASS copy: Bound in dark pink horizontal rib-grain cloth blocked in gold and blind in the same design as McLean D 0739. Upper cover blocked in gold with title and series title: "The Boy's Own Library". With glazed endpapers printed with an all-over wavy stripe pattern in red and black. With bookseller's label: "Sold by John F Shaw, Bookseller & Stationer 27, Southampton Row, Russell Square.". With presentation inscription dated 1847.
