Edition Notes
A 'Theoreticon' is a manual which contains a theory of church music. "The present book ... is a publication, a translation and an analysis of special texts, dealing with the theory of Byzantine church music and the development of its traditions in post-Byzantine times. All of them were taken from the Greek manuscripts which reached St. Petersburg by different ways and in different periods of time. It is to this fact that the book owes its name "Petersburg Theoreticon". The literary monuments of this kind dealing with the theory of music have been studied and published for a long time. The ultimate aim of this work is to study the historical development of the theory of music, the foundation of which had been laid in Byzantium"--P. 23.
Includes bibliographical references (p. 835-848) and indexes.
