Edition Notes
One wood-engraved plate is with signature: "H. G. Hine" and another is signed: "E. Evans Sc.". Plates are with captions.
Three wood-engraved illustrations within the text are signed as engraved by Edmund Evans. One is signed "H. G. HIne". Others are unsigned.
Many of the same wood-engraved illustrations were also used in the "New Edition" of "The boy's book of science" published [between 1889 and 1892] by George Routledge and Sons and printed by Ballantyne and Hanson. See McLean O 0479.55.
MASS copy: Bound in lavender bead-grain cloth blocked in gold and blind. Upper cover blocked in gold with title and illustration similar to those within the text, with signature: "JL" [i.e. John Leighton]. With pastel yellow painted endpapers. With bookseller's embossed stamp: "T. H. Palmer. 55, Gracechurch St. E. C. Bookseller & Stationer". With ownership inscription dated 1861: "T. W. Baggallay Hastings". With ownership inscription: "Thomas Weeding Baggalley". With ink stamp: "Thomas Weeding Weeding.".
