Publisher's advertisements on p. [1]-8 at end of each volume dated October, 1877: "George Bell & Sons' : List of works on botany & natural history.".

Plates are hand-coloured lithographs.

Vol. I-II each contain 30 plates; Vol. III-IV each contain 36 plates.

Most plates without imprint and unsigned. Some plates in Vol. I with imprint: "From Nature on Zinc by J. Erxleben" and "Vincent Brooks Day & Son, Imp." or "From nature on stone by J. Erxleben" and "Vincent Brooks Day & Son, Imp.". One plate in Vol. I with imprint: "From Nature on Stone by J. Erxleben" and "Vincent Brooks Day & Son, Lith." and another with imprint: "From Nature on Stone by J. Erxleben" and "Day & Son, Lith.rs to the Queen.".

Includes "Index to Genera and Species.": Vol. IV, p. [305]-321.

MASS copy: Bound in green patterned sand-grain cloth blocked in blind with the upper cover and spine blocked in gold. With an illustration similar to those within the text blocked in gold on the upper cover and in blind on the lower cover of all volumes. Each volume with a blue paper dust-jacket blocked in black with the same design and spine titling as that blocked in gold and blind on the cloth covers, except for the back of the jacket which lacks the illustration as blocked in blind on the cloth. With ownership inscription dated 1878: "Florence L. O. Aston" and Vol. I with the later ownership plate of Ruari McLean. Probably bound by Benjamin Fawcett in Driffield. Cf.
