Colour wood-engraved plates include areas printed in colour with metal. All are with captions.
Plates are unsigned. One is possibly signed [Dalziel Sc.?].
With the same setting of type (except lacking Preface) as another edition of this title published in [1871] by George Routledge and Sons. Possibly printed from stereotype plates. Wood-engraved plates [1] and [4-8] are also the same as plates [1-6] used in this edition. See McLean D 0946.

MASS copy: Bound in brown fine diagonal rib-grain cloth blocked in gold, black, silver and blind. Upper cover with red and blue paper onlays blocked in gold. Lower cover blocked in blind with publisher's monogram: "GR&S". Spine with imprint: "Routledge". Boards with bevelled edges. With dark brown painted endpapers. Lacking upper free endpaper.
