Edition Notes
Written and printed in 1772, but not published until 1793, when proceedings were instituted against Paine on account of his "Rights of man." It contains a preface, probably by Joel Barlow, giving anaccount of Paine's writings and of his services to America.
At the end of this copy, which formerly belonged to Moncure D. Conway, is mounted a printed leaf, on the recto of which is a letter from Paine to Oliver Goldsmith, written to accompany a copy of the "Case of the officers of excise", and dated Dec. 21, 1772; on the verso is Paine's petition to the Board of excise for reinstatement, dated July 3, 1766. Cf. Conway, Life of Paine, v. 1, p. 27, 63.
