"The work began publication in monthly parts in green paper wrappers, 1s each, with 4 plates, from 1 June 1850, completed in 90 parts in 1857. From part 32 dedication to the Queen and Royal Coat of Arms added to wrapper. Part I of re-issue appeared 1 January 1852, 2s 6d, with colour plates increased from 4 to 10 per part. Another re-issue started on 31 March 1858, 1s each part with 4 colour plates." Cf. McLean, Ruari and Antonia. Benjamin Fawcett : engraver and colour printer, 1988.

"Price 2s."--Cover. Two parts are bound within one printed wrapper. Each bound publication includes 8 plates.

"Vol. III." printed to the left of signatures within the text of parts 37, 38, 43, and 44 of this Re-issue. Text and plates of these parts also originally published in Vol. III of the first edition (1851-1857), dated 1853. See McLean O 452.

P. 182-184 with a different setting of type than the first edition (1851-1857), and one plate ("Garden Warbler") with slightly different colouring.

Plates printed in black with a beige background and hand-coloured. Parts of the image on most plates are also printed in a shade of light brown or grey in addition to black.

Plates in Parts 37, 38, 43 and 44 are unsigned.

MASS copy: In original lavender-coloured paper wrappers printed on the upper cover with the titling, dedication to the Queen and Royal Coat of Arms. Publisher's advertisements printed on lower wrappers and verso of both upper and lower. Holdings of the Massey Library only include Parts 37-38 and Parts 43-44.
