Ce récit autobiographique illustre une décennie par le vécu d'une génération, née dans les années trente, et confrontée à la guerre d'Algérie. Un jeune couple s'installe à Longwy, centre de la sidérurgie lorraine. Suspecté de sentiments "antinationaux", l'auteur fera son service comme simple soldat dans le train. Ce roman témoigne de la vie du contingent, des crimes de l'Armée française en Algérie et leurs séquelles sur l'état d'esprit des appelés.
