Edition Notes

"This edition was commenced by ... Martin Waltzemüller ... about the year 1505 ... Mathias Ringmann ... was also employed on the work. The modern maps were prepared by Waltzemüller, and most of them--perhaps all--engraved as early as 1507. The completion of the text, however, was delayed; and in 1508 all of the material passed into the hands of Jacobus Eszler and Georgius Ubelin ... who edited and finally published the work in 1513."--Sabin.

Imprint from colophon (N6b); date precedes printer statement.

Signatures: [A]² B-L⁶ M⁴ N⁶ a⁶ b⁴ c⁶.

Printed in double columns; 47 maps, 45 are double maps and 2 are single maps; the last map is printed in three colors.

The first two of the modern maps have interest as Americana. "The first ... includes an outline of the northeastern part of the South American continent ... the islands Isabella and Spagnola, and another fragmentary coast line ... The other ('Tabvla Terre Nove') is one of the earliest printed maps devoted entirely to the new world."--Sabin.

Includes index.

LC copy lacks final blank leaf; maps are hand colored and hand colored initials in red and blue, with one illuminated initial.
