Rees is best well-known for his revision of Chamber's Cyclopaedia, the New Cyclopaedia. For 15 years from 1768 he was minister of the "Presbyterian" congregation, St. Thomas's in Southwark; from 1783 to his death, he was the minister of the Old Jewry Chapel. He was a resident tutor of mathematics for 23 years at the Academy of Dissenting Ministers at Hoxton, and later he served as a professor of Hebrew and Mathematics at the New College in Hackney. He regularly lectured in Salters' Hall from 1773-9.
