LC copy has Usuard's Martyrologium bound between the front matter for the Legenda aurea of Jacobus de Voragine and the text of the Legenda aurea. T.p. inscriptions: Liber dom[us] Mariecastri pro cella F. Iudoci Vreden[sis]; Joseph Harbottle, Oswaldtwistle, near Accrington, Lancashire, March 4, 1854. Initials supplied in red or blue, a few decorated with red or violet penwork and green coloring; initial strokes, paragraph marks, and underlines supplied in red; the penwork on the first page of text is amplified by an acanthus in violet with green coloring, shaded by cross-hatching to give a 3-dimensional effect. Contemporary calf over boards, with 2 German-style clasps, decorated with stamps attributable to the charterhouse Marienburg (Weddern bei Dülmen). Cf. Die Schwenke-Sammlung gotischer Stempel- und Einbanddurchreibungen / Ilse Schunke. P. 100, no. 56; p. 287, no. 243; p. 310, no. 33; p. 315, no. 106. At end is a fragment ([4] leaves) of a Latin manuscript of German origin (ca. 1480?) on paper; it contains the end of an unidentified panegyric on Psalms and the first third of the Pseudo-Augustinian De virtute Psalmorum. Pastedowns are vellum leaves from a manuscript (14th cent.?) containing musical theory (on chant tones) with examples in neumic notation.
