In the summer of 1853 in Corfu an Italian exile, Francesco Ricci, was accused of the murder of a Greek citizen during a fight. Ricci was tried and sentenced to death. Tommaseo considered this an unjust sentence and wrote this essay which reconstructs the offense and explicates the contradictions in the investigation of the case.
