The hard bound, 11.75” x 8.50” sized book comprises more than 150 assorted landmarks since World War-I, supported by striking visuals throughout. It is divided into three chapters, that is Wars and Operations; Miscellaneous Milestones; Sports and Adventure. It showcases a large variety of outstanding landmarks related to Indian Army Regiments, Corps, formations, institutions, units and individuals covering a span of more than a century. It is a first venture of its kind to be undertaken by the Indian Army.
In its Foreword written by the Indian Army Chief - General Deepak Kapoor , it is stated -“The Indian Army has not just left indelible footprints on matters related to soldiering per se, but has also made inroads into a plethora of diverse fields in pursuit of all round excellence. A lot of these may not be so well known even within the Army”, hence the purpose of this book. He goes on to add –“the book is meant to instill a sense of pride amongst its readers, particularly the youth, apart from inspiring and motivating them to take on various challenges in life with a sense of purpose and missionary zeal” with the ultimate aim ‘to achieve’.
A product of Indian Army Headquarters, the book has been conceived, designed and authored by the military historian Colonel Anil Shorey (Retired) and published by Force Multipliers, a high quality, defence oriented publishing house. In its Preface written by the author, Colonel Anil Shorey, the first major reorganization of Indian Army during 1902-3 is briefly coverd, followed by another one during 1922 based on which the present Regimental system was evolved. It also mentions the integration of some of the veteran State Force units into the Indian Army after India’s Independence. Thereafter, in aesthetically designed pages, it projects each landmark in a visually striking manner.
Some of the outstanding landmarks listed occurred during the two World Wars, to be liberally followed by those which took place during the post Independence period. The book also showcases some of the oldest Indian Army Regiments; highlights some of India’s finest Institutions and gives its readers an insight into some most daring, breathtaking and challenging activities.
In essence, ‘Milestones’ is in actuality a multi - spectrum kaleidoscope, covering a wide canvas of more than a century. Many landmarks have also been reflected in the prestigious Guinness Book of World Records, while many others have tremendous potential to create world records in the near future.
