Aus historischen Begebenheiten und naturwissenschaftlichen Berichten spinnt Judith Schalansky zu jeder Insel eine Prosaminiatur, absurd-abgründige Geschichten, wie sie nur die Wirklichkeit sich auszudenken vermag, wenn sie mit wenigen Quadratkilometern im Nirgendwo auskommen muss. Sie handeln von seltenen Tieren und seltsamen Menschen: von gestrandeten Sklaven und einsamen Naturforschern, verirrten Entdeckern und verwirrten Leuchtturmwärtern, meuternden Matrosen und vergessenen Schiffbrüchigen, braven Sträflingen und strafversetzten Beamten, kurzum: von freiwilligen und unfreiwilligen Robinsons.
