The second pilot study of the EMN project, dedicated to “Irregular migration in Italy” looks at an issue that has produced widespread concern among politicians and the public. Irregularity is a growing phenomenon despite restrictive migration policies and the intensification of border controls.

The volume focuses on the following topics: immigration law, the gathering of data, measures to counteract and control immigration, social and welfare issues, existing field research on the characteristics of involved persons, opportunities to interact with the local population, costs and benefits, and finally, possible solutions for escaping irregularity. This overview also includes a bibliography and numerous statistical tables.
