Lory Stevenson had gone to the little Hebridean island of Creagdubh for a particular purpose, and she didn't want the dour laird, Grant Mackinnon, to find out what she was up to. She was, in fact, a sociologist who had to make a Government report on the island and its people - with a possible view to removing them lock, stock and barrel, to more 'civilised' surroundings. But Grant did find out what Lory was doing - and turned the tables on her in a decidedly disconcerting manner!
