Edition Notes
Holograph, signed.
Augustus Hesse is sorry to hear that Anne Warren Weston has been ill. He comments on the Civil War. He thinks Lee's army is making preparations for a new campaign against Washington and it would "be surely demoralized and burned to ashes under the fire of the Fortifications around Washington" if he tried to take that city.
On the second page of the manuscript, Augustus Hesse continues the letter with the salutation, "My dear friend." Hesse is troubled and apologizes because he thinks that his last letter may have offended Anne Warren Weston. Hesse wrote to Gov. John A. Andrew asking him for a furlough. Dr. Brown has promised an answer next week. Hesse's wound has healed, but he still has pain occasionally.
