Edition Notes

Holograph, signed.

Deborah Weston writes her little nephew, Henry Grafton Chapman, about the whale ships in the harbor. The William Rotch(?) arrived with 1900 barrels of sperm on board. Mrs. Howland's nephew is a mate on the vessel, and has killed 30 whales with his own hand. Deborah retells one of his stories of adventure with a whale. Also, tells a story about "a lady of the name Howland" who went whaling with her husband and apparently brought good luck to the ship.

Deborah signs the letter using her nickname, "Bella."
