Mrs. Sarah Blake Sturgis Shaw writes: "All my numerous slight reasons for refusing my name to the advertisement of the 'Fair' are vanished since witnessing the miserable state of the public spirit in Boston concerning the poor slave now in prison, ..." Mrs. Shaw will now sign the advertisement "with real delight." [The "poor slave now in prison" is a reference to the arrest and imprisonment of the fugitive slave George Latimer.]
