Kultni roman velike američke pesnikinje Silvije Plat izvorno je objavljen 1963. pod pseudonimom Viktorija Lukas. Delimično zasnovan na Silvijinom životu, postao je klasik XX veka, proslavljen zbog crnohumornog i oštroumnog portretisanja pedesetih godina prošlog veka i prodat u milionima primeraka širom sveta. Mesec dana nakon objavljivanja romana Stakleno zvono Silvija Plat je izvršila samoubistvo.
Kada Ester Grinvud 1953. pobedi na konkursu za studente koji je raspisala redakcija časopisa Ženski dan, ona odlazi u Njujork da provede mesec dana kao jedna od dvanaest odabranih gostujućih urednica ove redakcije. Ushićena je zbog ukazane prilike jer veruje da će tako ostvariti svoj životni san da postane pisac. Međutim, iako uživa u večerama, koktelima, poklonima, njen život se otrže kontroli. Ona tone u depresiju, u privatni pakao koji je dobrim delom posledica suočavanja sa nemogućim zahtevima koje pred ženu stavlja svet konzervativne Amerike pedesetih godina prošlog veka.
Silvija Plat majstorskim umećem uspeva da čitaoca uvuče u Esterin slom s takvim intenzitetom da njeno ludilo postaje opipljivo, pa čak i razumljivo, što čini Stakleno zvono istinskim američkim klasikom.
