Yunnan consists of former kingdoms bordering Tibet, Sichuan, Burma, Vietnam and Laos, and is the most bio-diverse province in China. The book includes text on the province's different food traditions such as foraging for mushrooms, the story behind Yunnan ham (the most famous and perhaps best is produced by the family of Deng Xiaoping's wife), organic tea production and vine growing. Recipes are interspersed with background essays on each ethnic group, describing traditions and traits and the natural beauty, flowers, agriculture, and festival foods of each region.
