"Eternal life" is an expression familiar to Christians and non-christians alike, but during the years of my ministry I have found that many who use the term do not comprehend its meaning. Some even go so far as to understand that we have eternal life by believing on the Lord Jesus Christ, and do not really know what it means to "believe." God's plan of salvation is so simple that even a child can understand it and yet, because of its simplicity, it is sometimes misinterpreted. Man is, by nature, self-centered and arrogant. He feels the need to be important, to do something or to help God do something to bring about his salvation. This is in direct conflict with God's plan and purpose. "For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: not of works, lest any man should boast (Eph. 2:8-9). I have long realized the need for "simplifying the simple," the need for putting into detailed explanation familiar term "eternal life," and expressing as clearly and concisely as possible what it means to "believe on the Lord Jesus Christ." I am convinced that more sinners would be saved if they understood these two fundamentals of Christianity, and I am doubly sure that many, many truly born again Christians would be assured, stabilized, and set free from all doubt if they fully understood the meaning of believing unto salvation and the divine guarantee of victory in the Christian life.
