In 1959 the Aston Martin team, racing DBR1’s, broke multiple records at the 1000k Nurburgring, dominated the 24 hour Le Mans, then overcome adversity at Goodwood, to win endurance racing’s coveted Triple Crown which victoriously secured the World Sports Car Championship outright for Britain, a truly monumental achievement and a milestone marker within global automotive history.
The spectacular DBR1 was designed, engineered and created by virtually one man, EJ ’Ted’ Cutting, his in-depth story; often incorrectly reported, is intimately revealed within his own fully illustrated book ‘Cutting Edge Conversations’, which incorporates an interview style, comprehensive but informal as the title suggests, with a compilation of all his accomplished work during a formidable and varied career.
A career which covered seven decades, was spent working, usually in the background; like the many geniuses when employed within a major company, namely KLG, Allard, Aston Martin, Glacier, Ford UK, quietly content to keep pushing the boundaries of innovation, seeking perfection and success through understanding and knowledge, not limelight.
Perhaps by reading this book and watching the full DVD of Ted’s ‘Racing Astons’ lecture — included within to compliment and endorse the book — may help change perception of what today constitutes fame, compared with a time when an individuals public recognition or celebrity status was reserved for only the very few.
Unfortunately due to compliance with Ted’s final explicit instructions and in difficult circumstances, a Limited Edition, self published book, was released exclusively through the Aston Martin Owners Club and Heritage Trust.
Given the responsibility for this high quality book, I believe I had fulfilled all Ted’s specific instructions baring one, however a conflicting one — how to make it readily available to inspire future engineers, designers and innovators — hopefully this can now finally be achieved with an eBook released on the internet, he would have approved of tapping into the benefits of information sharing in the digital age.
In collaboration with publishers Andrews UK Ltd., we have been able to create a full digital version of the original printed book — to highlight this different format and relate to the above 60th Anniversary, a revised cover page was introduced — with an additional digital link to view the 90 minute audio visual of the books complimentary DVD.
